Basic phrases and words you need to know
Are you going to Albania and want to learn some basic Albanian phrases? What a great idea! While many Albanians speak English (especially younger people), you’ll come a long way with a “hello” or “thank you” in Albanian. Locals really appreciate you doing the effort – and most importantly, it does come in handy in so many situations.

Republic of Albania Republika e Shqipërisë), is a country in Southeastern Europe. It is located on the Adriatic and Ionian Seas within the Mediterranean Sea and shares land borders with Montenegro to the northwest, Kosovo to the northeast, North Macedonia to the east, and Greece to the south. The country displays varied climatic, geological, hydrological, and morphological conditions, in an area of 28,748 km2 (11,100 sq mi). The landscape ranges from the snow-capped mountains in the Albanian Alps and the Korab, Skanderbeg, Pindus, and Ceraunian Mountains, to the hot and sunny coasts of the Adriatic and Ionian Seas along the Mediterranean.
Tirana
is its capital and largest city, followed by Durrës, Vlorë, and Shkodër.
Fun facts of language
- If you have figs in your rucksack everyone will be your friend, according to an Albanian proverb!
- Also known as ‘shqip’, is special from a linguist point of view because it doesn’t have a close sister language.
- There are about 50 villages in Italy where people have been speaking an Albanian dialect for hundreds of years.
- Some letters in the alphabet look like two letters but are counted as one, such as nj, rr, gj and xh.
