About the language
This language is an official language in Germany, Austria, Belgium, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, Switzerland and South Tyrol. Over 90 million people speak as a first language and 30 million as a second language. The language is closely related to Dutch, English and Frisian. Standard German, which uTalk teaches, is also known as Hochdeutsch or High German. There are also many Low language dialects, which are not all understandable to speakers of High language. The terms low and high refer to the geographical areas that these dialects originally came from.

German
mainly spoken in Central Europe. It is the most widely spoken and official or co-official language in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and the Italian province of South Tyrol. It is also a co-official language of Luxembourg and Belgium, as well as a recognized national language in Namibia. Outside Germany, it is also spoken by people communities in France (Bas-Rhin), Czech Republic (North Bohemia), Poland (Upper Silesia), Slovakia (Bratislava Region), and Hungary (Sopron).
The language is most similar to other languages within the West Germanic language branch, including Afrikaans, Dutch, English, the Frisian languages, Low German, Luxembourgish, Scots, and Yiddish. It also contains close similarities in vocabulary to some languages in the North Germanic group, such as Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish. German is the second-most widely spoken Germanic language after English, which is also a West Germanic language.
Fun facts of language
- The expression ‘Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof’ – meaning I can’t understand it – literally translates as ‘I only understand a train station’.
- All nouns in the language start with a capital letter, even when they’re in the middle of a sentence.
- There’s a local phrase ‘Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei’ which means ‘everything has an end, only the sausage has two’!
